ADHD Coaching Awareness for Coaches

PART 1: Introduction to ADHD

with Donnalea Barber and Joanne Norris

NOTE: please register for each session separately. Each session can stand alone but there is great benefit in doing all 3 sessions if possible.

If you are struggling to support some of your clients, ADHD may well be at the heart of this. We invite you to join our series of 3 presentations which will address questions Life coaches and their neuro-divergent clients have about ADHD:

People who have ADHD need a coach who understands what it means to have ADHD and can adapt their coaching techniques accordingly. ADHD coaching has been found to be extremely helpful for adults with this special type of brain.

Here are some key truths about Life coaching and ADHD:

  1. 85% of adults who have ADHD do not know they have it. Coaches may already be coaching clients with ADHD and may not realize this.
  2. With Covid-19, more adults are working remotely and discovered they have ADHD.
  3. It’s important to understand what it means to be an adult who has experienced undiagnosed or misdiagnosed ADHD.
  4. Each ADHD clients’ brain is uniquely wired - like a fingerprint - and traditional life coaching methods are typically not adequate to fully meet their needs.
  5. Life coaches specialized in ADHD are not common and are difficult to find.

Some objectives for this 3-part event series includes:

  • Learn about what it means to have ADHD and its related conditions, particularly Autism.
  • Recognize how ADHD will affect coaching strategies, techniques and tools that you use as a Life Coach and how they might need to be modified.
  • Understand the importance of stepping with their clients into a coaching space that will be very different from their neurotypical clients.
  • Develop awareness about low self-esteem and limiting beliefs as specific challenges for these clients and understand these issues must be addressed comprehensively early on in the coaching alliance.
  • Learn some aspects of the Neuro-Linguistic Programming [NLP] coaching philosophy as well as some NLP coaching techniques that can facilitate coaching those with ADHD and possibly high-functioning Autism.

Part 1: October 14, 2021 – “Introduction to ADHD and Coexisting Conditions and Related Conditions” (characteristics of people with “Special” brains (ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, etc.)

ADHD is a highly heritable neurobiological and neurodevelopmental condition with a genetic component. It is a life-long condition that impacts parts of the brain (structure, chemistry function and neural networks), affecting one’s ability to organize, function and manage executive and cognitive activities, emotional responses and overt behaviors.  People with ADHD have also many strengths and talents because of their unique brain wiring; oftentimes, they are not fully aware of this because the focus at school was always on their deficits.

Be sure to register separately for the Part 2 and Part 3

Part 2:  Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 2pm ET -- “Coexisting Conditions / Indicators / Red Flags:” Typical challenges for people who have ADHD, Autism, etc. and how these impact coaching
