CCNI Core Competency #1
Demonstrates Ethical Practice
Presenter: Dr. Rich Weigel
This presentation will take you through the ideas behind ethical practice within Christian coaching and dig a little deeper into an understanding of Christian ethics overall. We will briefly discuss the predominant theories of ethics and the principles of moral decision-making. We will identify ethical challenges in our Christian coaching business including social responsibilities, values, and ethical frameworks. We will review ethical coaching ideas and frameworks from a biblical perspective.
Ethics – Christian Coaching Application
Professional ethics compares the needs of the professional with the needs of the client and determines what is ethical or unethical. Ethics for the Christian coach transcends professional ethics to that of morality and values based on scripture. Therefore, what might be deemed ethical conduct in a professional sense may be unethical from a biblical perspective.
The Bible is replete with moral direction and guidance, (2 Timothy 3:16-17), the foundation of which is primarily love for God and secondarily love for others. (Matthew 22:37-40) Biblically minded Christians recognize that our responsibilities as professionals may have eternal consequences, and we should conduct business with an eternal perspective in mind. (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
A CCNI credentialed coach:
1. Understands and follows all CCNI Ethical Guidelines.
2. Uses an appropriate biblically based code of ethics to solve dilemmas and when warranted, uses an ethical decision-making model to help guide decisions.
What Is Ethics?
Ethics as a moral and normative science refers to principles that define human behavior as right, good and proper. As Christian coaches we should consider a means to understand ethics in terms of biblical perspective and professional quality.
Definition of Ethics.
By the term ‘ethics’ we mean a branch of moral philosophy – a sense of rightness or wrongness of actions, motives and the results of these actions. In short, it is a discipline that identifies good or evil, just or unjust, fair or unfair practices, about moral duty. It is well-based standards that a person should do, concerning rights, obligations, fairness, benefits to society and so on.
