Is Your Guilty Conscience Holding You Back?
Reflecting on the past can be a powerful way to learn, as we acknowledge the struggles we experienced, the hard times that produced strength of character, and the successes snatched from the jaws of defeat.
Remembering empowers us to apply who we have become to meeting the challenge of who we need to be. But the problem with remembering is that all those turns in the road we shouldn’t have taken come back to haunt us; awareness of the past may be curative but only if it is dealt with and left behind.
…but in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sin year by year. (Heb 10:3)
Repentance and sacrifice repeated over and over just served to illustrate that a better way was needed to break the sin-repent-sacrifice-forgiveness-sin pattern once and for all. Repeated sacrifice focuses attention on the failures, and we know what happens in coaching if focused attention is directed on what the client wants to move away from, don’t we?
What was needed was a deep awareness of God’s ways and a clean conscience giving us an authentic hope for the future:
For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws upon their heart, and on their mind will I write them,” He then says, “And their sins and lawless deeds I will remember no more.” (Heb 10:15-17)
So if you get that nagging feeling that there is something you should have completed, something you need to put right before you can take that next step into your inheritance, remember that Jesus has already done it.
