Why are we so often surprised when Jesus shows up, when He promised He would always be with us? I guess we are in good company as the disciples often didn’t recognise Him either, thinking that he was either an uninformed visitor to Jerusalem or even a ghost. Doubt was one of the keys to them not seeing Jesus in their fear or disappointment:
While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be to you.” But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit. And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Luke 24:36-38
So often we see only what we expect to see. The conversation on the road to Emmaus that day can be a metaphor for our coaching; as we help our clients see new things from different perspectives, how do we expect Jesus might join in? Is it always a strident “Word from The Lord” or some insight gained during prayer? How might Jesus take a different role in our conversations, one where we experience with our clients the impact of His revelation while unaware of His presence?
The more intentionally we live out our devotion to Jesus, the less we will doubt. Through faith the light of His presence drives out the doubt which clouds our vision.
Let’s encourage one another to expect Jesus and recognise Him in every situation. Join with other Christian coaches for some Live Devotion at noon Eastern on Thursday 6th February. Download the PDF so you have the scriptures to hand – bring and share your own, too!
