    "Susan's Summaries"

Join with the CCNI Community in reading and discussing business books designed to understand, develop, and grow your coaching practice. Each month we will review a book designated to increase awareness of entrepreneurial ideas as well as share insights and practices that will help generate clients. We will find books that will inspire, challenge, and guide you to grow your business.

As coaches, we tend to do most of our work alone. Let's set aside time to purposefully come together for prayer, encouragement, and refreshment while learning from best practices to enhance our knowledge and understanding.

"You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read."

    -Charlie "Tremendous" Jones

    April's Book:

Who’s your biggest enemy? Possibly you?

Enemy Mode is an immensely damaging brain state that occurs in everyday life. In enemy mode, a person sees and experiences others as adversaries. Living in this mode poisons family and community bonds. It contributes to social stress, business failure, divorce, alienation, domestic violence, crime, racism, and international violence. Social media magnifies the impact of enemy mode toward almost all topics or persons imaginable.

Longtime author and neuropsychologist Dr. Jim Wilder explains how the brain develops enemy mode and searches for ways to get the brain to “refriend.” Since a brain in enemy mode cannot tell when someone is trying to help, it rejects or attacks its allies, including refrienders. Wilder puts his years of research to the test in assessing the impossible task put forth by the Christian faith: to love one’s enemies.

After being trained in enemy mode through the military, business, and even friendships, retired Brigadier General Ray Woolridge comes alongside Wilder, bringing the reader on his journey of learning to refriend. He interviews leaders in sports, business, the military, law enforcement, politics, health care, and education, assessing the enemy mode impact on lives and culture.

Can Wilder and Woolridge figure out how enemy mode works and craft a solution? And can they get people and institutions to implement those solutions? This book is for all who desire to be better equipped to face the barrage of daily relational stressors that come at them. It’s for all who long for more harmonious relationships at home, in the workplace, and in their communities.

Explore the “being” beneath a coach’s “doing”

It’s not enough for coaches to know the “what” and “how” of coaching—coaches must also understand the “who.” In our “The Character of the Coach” 7-part series, you will discover that a coach’s doing—demonstrating skills, using various techniques and tools, and so on—flows from the depths of their being.

The series is based on the book Beyond Competent, which Chris McCluskey (Founder and President of PCCI) heartily endorsed:

“Most coaching books have emphasized what we must do in order to coach well. Beyond Competent goes beyond our doing and unpacks who coaches must be and become.  This book encouraged me to continue my own journey of becoming more Christlike in my coaching.”

    Your Facilitators:

    Todd Kemp, MA, MCC

“Where do you want to go?” is a question that has resonated with Todd since high school, when a mentor asked about his life ambitions. It propelled him to new adventures beyond the small Central California farm where he grew up, including being part of two NCAA championship teams, playing for the U.S. National Water Polo Team, running IT projects on three continents, and leading sales/systems engineering teams at a Fortune 150 tech firm. Todd also pursued three entrepreneurial ventures, including one debacle, which earned him a lot of scar tissue and fostered great respect for business owners and leaders who care about their people and want to grow as leaders.

Coaching with curiosity, compassion, and courage, Todd helps these leaders and their teams explore their own adventures in pursuing inside-out growth and building transformative cultures to create more value, experience greater well-being, and integrate a greater purpose. He and his bride, Julianne, have two young-adult children and live in Colorado, where they enjoy outdoor adventuring together.

    Kiley Lee, ACC, LCSW

Kiley is an executive and life coach who has been helping people change for more than 20 years, beginning her lifelong career of helping people as a clinical social worker in transitional housing, university, and outpatient mental health settings.

As a coach, Kiley particularly enjoys working with women leaders and nonprofit executive directors who want to develop their own strengths, self-awareness, leadership abilities, and teams in order to impact the world for good.

Kiley is known for her relational style, sense of humor, directness, and fierce commitment to unleashing the very best in her clients.

Kiley lives in San Diego with her husband and two kids, coaching at a standing desk while her dog, Sadie, snoozes next to her in the recliner. She enjoys reading fiction, being outdoors, eating chocolate, and being beaten by her 12-year-old at Wordle nearly every day. She’d love for you to start a conversation with her on LinkedIn.

    May's Book:

The 6 Types of Working Genius is the fastest way to help people identify the type of work that brings them joy and energy, and avoid work that leads to frustration and burnout.

Beyond the personal discovery and instant relief that Working Genius provides, the model also gives teams a remarkably simple and practical framework for tapping into one another’s natural gifts, which increases productivity and reduces unnecessary judgment.

In classic Lencioni fashion, Pat brings his model to life in a page-turning fable that is as relatable as it is compelling. He tells the story of Bull Brooks, an entrepreneur, husband, and father who sets out to solve his own frustration at work and stumbles into a new way of thinking that changes the way he sees his work, his team, and even his marriage.

What sets this book—and the model behind it—apart from other tools and assessments is the speed at which it can be understood and applied, and the relevance it has to every kind of work in life, from running a company to launching a product to managing a family.

In addition to this book, Lencioni and the Table Group have created a 10-minute assessment that helps individuals quickly identify their gifts and apply this model to themselves and their teams. Join the hundreds of thousands of people who have already discovered their Working Genius, and experience the transformation in your work, your team, and your life.

    *****

The series is based on the book Beyond Competent, which Chris McCluskey (Founder and President of PCCI) heartily endorsed:

“Most coaching books have emphasized what we must do in order to coach well. Beyond Competent goes beyond our doing and unpacks who coaches must be and become.  This book encouraged me to continue my own journey of becoming more Christlike in my coaching.”

    Wende Gaikema, MBA, PCC

Wende is an executive and leadership coach who helps leaders develop their business and their people. Wende works with executives, leaders, and teams to build their skills in leadership presence, EQ, influential communication, change management, and personal and team effectiveness.

Wende’s leadership experience includes extensive and increasingly responsible roles at Procter & Gamble in brand management, sales, and operations. She has served on multiple boards and chaired the board of directors for a large nonprofit.

Wende and her husband, Jeff, have been married for 31 years and have three sons—one in heaven and two on earth. She enjoys outdoor recreation and ministering to people with her certified therapy dogs.

Jennifer Grote, Certified HWC, Strengths Champion Certified Coach

Jennifer had the makings of a life coach from a young age. She was often interested in the inner thoughts and feelings of others. Her family would chuckle when little “Jenny” (age 5 or 6) would ask adults to sit down and tell her about their day. Attuned, she would empathize and ask still more questions.

Professionally, Jennifer has held multiple roles in sales and leadership across industries. Before leaving to start her coaching business, she was an area director of sales for a large home health and hospice organization. It was during that time that Jennifer began to feel restless. Perhaps it was working with people who were near the end of their lives, but she began to think about her path, her passion, and her purpose. She invited two of her closest friends to meet with her once a month to discuss their hopes, dreams, and goals. Each person’s life was completely transformed. Jennifer knew she wanted more of whatever “this” was. She then discovered life coaching and went on to become a Certified Life & Wellbeing Coach through Duke Health & Wellbeing, and a Strengths Champion Certified Coach. Now, Jennifer works with high-achieving women who have that restless feeling inside of them and may be wondering about their own path, passion, and purpose. She helps them get unstuck and then move forward with clarity, confidence, and courage.

    July's Book:

Since its original publication in 2000, Leadership and Self-Deception has become an international word-of-mouth phenomenon. Rather than tapering off, it sells more copies every year. The book's central insight--that the key to leadership lies not in what we do but in who we are--has proven to have powerful implications not only for organizational leadership but in readers' personal lives as well.

Leadership and Self-Deception uses an entertaining story everyone can relate to about a man facing challenges at work and at home to expose the fascinating ways that we blind ourselves to our true motivations and unwittingly sabotage the effectiveness of our own efforts to achieve happiness and increase happiness. We trap ourselves in a "box" of endless self-justification. Most importantly, the book shows us the way out. Readers will discover what millions already have learned--how to consistently tap into and act on their innate sense of what's right, dramatically improving all of their relationships.

    October's Book:

“Let’s hold nothing back and die empty, pouring ourselves out completely as a gift back to God. . . . This is when we’ll truly come alive and experience life to its fullest.”—John Bevere

Do you ever feel like a spectator in God’s kingdom? Perhaps you know there’s something you should be doing, but you just can’t pinpoint it. Most of us want to make a big impact with our lives, but struggle with questions like:

    • How can I be sure I’m not missing God’s will for me?
    • What role do my unique gifts play in building God’s kingdom?
    • How do I make sure I live up to my God-given potential?
    • Is my calling less significant if I’m not in “ministry”?
    • How do I balance resting in God’s grace with meaningful actions for His kingdom?
    • How do I break fear and move forward even when it feels uncertain and risky?

In this profound book, best-selling author John Bevere relies on a careful exploration of Scripture and uses powerful stories to help you think differently about your calling and why it’s so important to God. As you turn these pages, you’ll be empowered to multiply your God-given gifts and step into your potential.

If you’re ready to trade inaction for greater purpose, your journey begins here

    November's Book:

    “Who am I becoming?”

That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words:

“Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.”

It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was—and continues to be—the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness, as a root of much evil.

Within the pages of this book, you’ll find a fascinating roadmap to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.
