ACTIVE LISTENING

Dr. Michael Marx will focus on ICF’s core competency #5:  Active Listening.  Active Listening is the ability to focus completely on what the client is saying and is not saying, to understand the meaning of what is said in the context of the client’s desires, and to support the client’s self-expression.  It is listening without an agenda, distinguishing between the words, tone of voice and body language.

Here are some realities about listening.

• Listening is a foundational coaching skill.

• Listening can be a rare gift to others (less than 5% of people feel truly heard).

• Listening is hard to do well.

• Listening well is a critical skill and it is essential to good coaching.

• There is no point in asking powerful questions if you are not going to listen deeply.

• Coaches observe the 80/20 rule (listen 80% of the time).

• LISTEN and SILENT are spelled with the same letters. (Let silence do the heavy lifting!)

• Listening is NOT passive, but requires actively, intentionally and intuitively grasping facts, feelings, mindsets, etc., in what is said AND not said.
