Explore the “being” beneath a coach’s “doing”
It’s not enough for coaches to know the “what” and “how” of coaching—coaches must also understand the “who.” In our “The Character of the Coach” 7-part series, you will discover that a coach’s doing—demonstrating skills, using various techniques and tools, and so on—flows from the depths of their being.
The series is based on the book Beyond Competent, which Chris McCluskey (Founder and President of PCCI) heartily endorsed:
“Most coaching books have emphasized what we must do in order to coach well. Beyond Competent goes beyond our doing and unpacks who coaches must be and become. This book encouraged me to continue my own journey of becoming more Christlike in my coaching.”

Marc Ottestad
Marc is president and founder of Legacy Coaching LLC and the Southern California director for CBMC. Over the past 50 years Marc has led organizations in hospitality, retail, and leadership development. In Marc’s hospitality season, he opened and operated a dozen restaurants and entertainment facilities. This work had the greatest impact on his life as he connected with his wife of 43 years, Kasey, creating the foundation of a good life that includes three children—Toby, Kristin, and David—as well as grandchildren.
With Kasey’s encouragement, Marc created a pathway out of hospitality by completing his degree in finance at Cal State Fullerton in 1985. His degree opened the door that resulted in his retail season. Over the next 20 years, as a partner at Pro Sound and Stage Lighting (PSSL), Marc recruited, developed, and strategically grew the enterprise to 125 employees and gained a position as a national leader in the sound and lighting industry. It was in this season of personal and professional challenges that Marc met Jesus.
As the president of PSSL, Marc connected with BBL Forum, a faith-centered peer and coaching leadership development resource. Being encouraged toward centering Jesus, Marc was invited to join BBL Forum, which evolved into Convene. Marc led the recruitment and training of group leaders and membership as God moved. A significant resource for growing the impact of Convene was connecting to PCCI and Cheryl Scanlan, which led to Marc’s move into coaching and personal growth, including the privilege of serving as a coach presenter and board member for Promised Land Living.
